(12/30) Here's the Steelers opponents for next season. This list is completely unofficial so don't be surprised if it's not totally correct: at home - AFC Central, New England, Seattle, Green Bay, Chicago or Minnesota; away - AFC Central, Miami, Kansas City, Detroit, Tampa Bay. (12/23) On December 23, 1972, the Steelers met the Oakland Raiders in a playoff game. Everyone knows the rest of the story. The Immaculate Reception has become the greatest single moment in the history of both the Steelers and the NFL. There was a celebration here in Pittsburgh last weekend to honor the 25th anniversary of the play. How many football plays are honored with a huge celebration? One of the things that still makes people talk about the play is the controversy surrounding it. Did Frenchy Fuqua touch the ball before Franco Harris made the catch? Frenchy always says that he knows but won't tell anyone. The jagoff Raiders say that they were screwed. Here's the way I see it: I don't believe Fuqua knows if he touched that ball or not, the play happened so fast and he was getting popped by Jack Tatum at the time. I don't think the refs knew either, but they ruled it a TD anyway. My father was at the game. Yes, he was actually there; he's not one of the hundreds of phonies here in Pittsburgh who claim to have been there. He was there sitting in the same exact seats we sit in today, and he always says that if those refs would have dared call the play back, especially after they had already signaled touchdown and fans poured out onto the field, they would not have left the game in good health. Had the game been played in Oakland, who knows what would've happened, and who really cares. The Raiders can continue to cry like the little pricks they were (and still are), while the Steelers celebrate a great miracle that will live forever in football history. For a more in depth article on the play, read this story which was published recently by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Here is video of the Immaculate Reception (3.13 MB - AVI) shot by NFL Films, who somehow captured this play on tape and immortalized it for all time. (12/19) CB Chad Scott was named Steelers rookie of the year for 1997. Scott struggled at times but still managed to win his starting job back from former all-pro Donnell Woolford. He came up big in big games, especially against Denver. He plays the toughest position in football too. Also, Darren Perry received the Chief Award (named after Art Rooney) for being the most media-friendly Steeler. Perry's always doing talk shows and stuff. You can tell he's already setting up for a post-football career as a broadcaster. (12/13) With their incredible victory over New England, the Steelers have put themselves in position to win their 4th straight AFC Central Division title, and 5th under Cowher. The only way the Jags can still win it is if Tennesee beats us by at least 65 points next week. Since that's obviously not going to happen, I'm declaring the Steelers champions right now. This year's title was much sweeter than the last two years, because the Central was a tough division this year, and give credit to the Jaguars, who battled us all season for it. But the Jags just aren't the quality organization the Steelers are, and even after losing a ton of big-name players, the Steelers have once again won this division and proved why they are the best team around. (12/11) Six Steelers made it to this year's pro bowl team and they will all be starting for the AFC. On offense, the Steelers starters are Jerome Bettis, Yancey Thigpen, and of course Dermonti Dawson, who is generally considered the best center in football. On defense, Joel Steed, Levon Kirkland, and Carnell Lake will showcase their talents in Hawaii. Everyone but Steed has been an all-pro before. Great timing for Steed, bad timing for the Steelers: Steed is a free agent at the end of this season. (12/10) The Denver Broncos are sore losers. They keep coming up with more excuses for getting beat by a clearly better team last Sunday. On Sunday they cried about dropped passes. Yesterday, a mean-spirited article was published in a Denver newspaper tearing up coach Bill Cowher for getting excited and occasionally running onto the field after a play. The article called Cowher a "golden retreiver" and a "40 year old cheerleader". The Broncos players were upset by Cowher also. Denver DE Alfred Williams screamed threats at Cowher for coming onto the field, saying that Cowher "really irritates" him. What a bunch of crybabies! The only other two games they lost this year were extremely close games, so they had to come up with some excuse for getting beat by 11 points. I really hope they come here for the playoffs, and I hope Cowher comes out on the field after every single play, just to piss them off. (11/19) Last night, Kordell Stewart was one of the guests on The Late Show with David Letterman. If you didn't get to see it, Kordell and Dave went up on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater to throw footballs at a water tower across the street, and Kordell nailed it on each throw. Best quote from Dave: "What happened to all those other QB's (that Stewart played behind in 1995)? I know we got one here playing for the Jets - kind of." Meanwhile, Jerome Bettis appears on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated. The cover story is about big running backs, and Bettis is one of the biggest. (11/18) Man, I was impressed when Greg Lloyd got a penalty while on the bench during a preseason game earlier this season. "There's something he's never got in trouble for before," I thought. Now Lloyd has a new fine to add to his list: $2500 for throwing a football into the stands last Sunday at Three Rivers. Lloyd had just recovered a fumble and he joyously tossed the ball into the stands. No harm done, right? Apparently, that is not the case. The NFL has a rule that says handing a football to a fan is ok, but throwing one into the stands is dangerous. This stems from an incident a few years back in Cleveland (figures). At a Browns game, someone was actually stabbed in a fight for a souvenir football that was thrown into the stands. Lloyd could write a book about all the stupid things he has gotten fined for over the years! (11/4) This has already been a bad week for the Steelers. Last night they lost to K.C., and tonight the much talked about Regional Renaissance Initiative, a half-cent sales tax which would've funded new stadiums for the Steelers and Pirates among other things, has been shot down by the voters. This tax was trying to pass not only in Allegheny County (where Pittsburgh is located) but in 11 surrounding counties. It was clear that the people of Pittsburgh were opposed to this for a long time. You won't find bigger sports fans anywhere in the U.S., but this is still a blue-collar town and no one wants more taxes. Kevin McClatchy (Pirates owner), Tom Murphy (mayor), and Dan Rooney have all said there is no Plan B. Now of course the question arises: will our teams stay here in Pittsburgh? For the Pirates, it's not looking too good. They're already in heavy financial trouble, especially since you have to buy championships in baseball. As far as the Steelers are concerned, it would take more than one shot-down tax for the Rooneys to move from Pittsburgh. I cringe to even think about it. Art Rooney would cringe in his grave to even think about it. But you know they're gonna start crying now about how we won't be able to remain competitive. Many people here agree that Pittsburgh needs a lot of regional development (including stadiums), but this obviously wasn't the best way to do it. We'll see what happens from here. (11/4) LB Greg Lloyd was fined $15,000 by the NFL for his uncalled for cheap shot on Jags WR Keenan McCardell. I have always been a huge Lloyd fan, and I think he has been unfairly fined before, but this incident was just ridiculous. Why would McCardell threaten Lloyd's family on his answering machine? How does he even get Lloyd's number? What does he do, call and threaten him and then at the end say "Oh, by the way, this is Keenan McCardell, #87 on the Jaguars?" Lloyd needs to calm down and start playing the way he used to play. (10/28) Notes an'at: The NFL is going to look into the Greg Lloyd - Keenan McCardell incident and possibly fine or suspend Lloyd....The Buffalo Bills have announced that Alex Van Pelt will be the starter for their game Sunday. We all love Van Pelt from his glory days at Pitt and hope that he can prove himself and become the Bills permanent starting QB....The Falcons have signed QB Jim Miller....Next Tuesday is election day, and in Pittsburgh that means that the Regional Renaissance Initiative will be voted on. The initiative seeks not only to build new stadiums for the Steelers and Pirates, but also to improve the conditions and economy of Pittsburgh by imposing a half-cent sales tax in Allegheny and surrounding counties. This initiative is very unpopular here in Western PA, and will probably get shot down by the voters. (10/15) WR Charles Johnson (knee) and WR/KR Will Blackwell (foot) will both be out 4-6 weeks. Even worse, rookie WR Mike Adams tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season. All this comes after the Steelers lost receivers Jahine Arnold and Henry Bailey for the entire year before the season ever began.
With that in mind, the Steelers have signed former Chargers WR Andre Coleman. If that name sounds familiar it is because Coleman is an excellent kick returner and a pretty decent receiver as well. In 1994 & 95, he returned four kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns (including one against the Steelers).
Thigpen, Hawkins, Coleman, and Corey Holliday are the only WR's left on the active roster!
To make room for Coleman on the roster, the Steelers finally made a decision on their kicker, and they decided on Norm Johnson, cutting veteran Chris Jacke. Johnson was supposed to get cut again after the first two or three games, but Jacke was still injured and Norm won his job back. Good for him; he deserves it.
(9/30) Quarterback Kordell Stewart was named the Miller Lite NFL Player of the Week for his performance last Sunday against the Tennesee Oilers. Stewart had 244 yards passing and accounted for three of the team's four touchdowns (one on a pass, two on runs). Stewart really showed that he is going to be a superstar in the near future. (9/25) The Steelers today announced plans for a $25 million dollar commitment towards a new stadium and a 25 year lease. This is kind of surprising, considering that all the talk of the "regional rennessiance" plan here in Pittsburgh that will be voted on during election day. The Steelers really want a new building, especially since all the other teams in the AFC Central will be playing in new stadiums by the year 2000 (including the new Cleveland Browns). (9/24) Bill Cowher admitted in his weekly press conference that he considered tackling the Jacksonville player who was returning the blocked the blocked field goal for a touchdown to end Monday's game. Ok there, Woody Hayes!! Let's just calm down a little! Had Cowher acted on his misguided thoughts, he may no longer have been head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers (or any team for that matter). It still would've been interesting though! (9/2) Center Dermonti Dawson, who is generally considered the best center in the NFL, will be staying with the Steelers for five more years. Dawson was supposed to become a free agent after this year, and giving the Steelers' policy of not negociating after the season has started, it seemed like that would happen. But we can rest easy now, because Dawson, already in the tenth season of what will be a hall of fame career, will make some big money and avoid a Rod Woodson-like situation. (9/2) Guard Brendan Stai is going to be out for about 6-8 weeks with a broken foot. Tom Myslinski or maybe even Jamain Stephens (probably not Stephens) will start in Stai's place. Also, QB Jim Miller has found a new home with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Starter Mark Brunell is out for quite some time and backup Rob Johnson is playing but has been getting banged up. You know what this means? That when the Steelers and Jags face off in two weeks on Monday Night Football, Miller may be the Jags starting QB! That would be real interesting. Finally, WR Michael Irvin wasn't satisfied with just burning the Steelers secondary. After the game Irvin took time out of his busy crack-smoking schedule to rip into the fans because we cheered when Deion Sanders almost broke his neck. Yeah, it wasn't a real classy move by us, but c'mon - we're talking about Deion and the Cowboys. The rules are different! Irvin said that he was "truly hurt" when that happened. Yeah right Mike, I'm sure it tore you up inside. Too bad the defense didn't get a piece of you too. (8/25) The Steelers cut QB Jim Miller. Although he has a big salary, the Steelers supposedly weren't even considering dumping last season's opening day starter. But that's what they did, and now The Mighty Quinn will be the third string QB. This wasn't a bad move; Miller would've sat the bench all season. Plus, Quinn looked too good in preseason to cut. The Steelers also got rid of DL Israel Raybon, LB Eric Ravotti, OL Bernard Dafney. Meanwhile, with kicker Chris Jacke out for a while, guess who's back? That's right - it's Norm Johnson!! The Steelers just cut him two months ago, but now he is back - but for how long? Will he get cut again when Jacke comes back? Norm was always a pretty reliable kicker; he was cut because of salary. It would be so wrong to cut the poor guy again, but what else do they do when Jacke comes back? They may have to choose. (8/20) The Steelers cut their roster down to 70 by getting rid of some basically no-name players. Among the somewhat recognizable: CB Barron Miles and rookie CB Daryl Porter. The real cut comes on Sunday - that will be interesting. (8/7) The battle for right inside linebacker is over. Fan favorite Jerry Olsavsky(right) has been beaten out by second year sensation Earl Holmes. Holmes has proven that he is a potential superstar, and although Jerry O. is still a great player, the Steelers just couldn't sit Holmes on the bench for another season. He's younger and quicker. Jerry O., who has played solidly at that position for years despite serious knee problems, is understandibly disapointed by Cowher's decision to start Holmes. Meanwhile, another younger player, rookie Chad Scott, has been named the starter cornerback over veteran J.B.Brown. In the first two preseason games, Scott, this year's number one draft pick, has also shown great potential. Cowher wanted to make these decisions now so all the players involved could get used to and feel solid in their roles as starters, unlike certain players in the past (see Miller, Jim). (7/26) Center Mike Webster was inducted into the Hall of Fame today. Webster, who has had serious financial problems lately, played 14 seasons for the Steelers (1974-88) and two seasons for the Chiefs (89-90). Terry Bradshaw presented his former center for induction, and the two had one last snap together on stage. (7/8) More $$-cutting news to report: PK Norm Johnson has been let go after the 37 year-old refused to take a pay cut from his $600,000 salary. In his place, the Steelers have signed long-time Packers kicker Chris Jacke. Jacke, like Johnson, has always been a pretty reliable kicker. Jacke spent the last 8 seasons in Green Bay before learning that the Packers had decided to go with a rookie for the 97 season instead of him. Norm Johnson played for the Steelers for just 2 seasons after replacing the somewhat legendary Gary Anderson, who had been our kicker for the previous 12 seasons. (7/1) Fan favorite Erric Pegram has been traded to the Chargers for a 7th round draft pick in 1999. The Steelers excuse for dumping a talented RB/KR who adds much needed depth to the team is the salary cap and draft pick money. Whatever, this is certainly a dumb move by the Steelers. (6/22) Free agent CB Rod Woodson has finally found a home apparently. Woodson will soon sign a two year deal with San Francisco that will pay him considerably less than what the Steelers offered him. This ends the Rod Woodson era in Pittsburgh. Woodson will most likely be a hall of famer, and don't be suprised if you never see a Steeler player wearing #26 ever again. Unfortunately, Woodson's departure was messy, especially when he bad-mouthed the Pittsburgh fans. Woodson and the Niners expect to make it official in the next few weeks. (6/10) QB Kordell Stewart has signed a new, four year deal with the Steelers worth 9 million dollars. The contract also includes a 2.6 million dollar signing bonus. If this doesn't convince people that Stewart is the new starter, I don't know what will. The first year of this deal is only for $250,000. That's great for the Steelers because of the salary cap. Stewart, 24, is entering his third NFL season and will be a QB full time from now on. (6/03) Free agent WR Andre Hastings will now fumble punts for the New Orleans Saints. Even though Hastings had a pretty decent 96 season, he was still not going to be a starter on the Steelers so he left. The Saints signed him to a two year deal. The Steelers then signed WR Courtney Hawkins, formerly of Tampa Bay. Hawkins gives the Steelers much needed help at receiver. (5/18) The Steelers have signed former Oakland Raiders DE Nolan Harrison. Harrison is a 6'5", 280 pound lineman who was cut by Al Davis in a salary cap move. The Steelers get much needed help on the defensive line. In other news, speedy WR Jahine Arnold tore his ACL and will miss the entire 1997 season. The Steelers are running thin on receivers. . (4/29) A referendum could be put on the ballot of this year's November elections asking voters to approve a tax which would raise money to fund a number of projects in the city of Pittsburgh, one of them being a new 200 million dollar stadium for the Steelers. The city also needs 208 million dollars to build the Pirates a new stadium and 260 million to make improvements on the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown. Whether the taxpayers of Western PA will go for this plan or not is yet to be seen. One way or the other, it looks like Three Rivers won't be around too much longer. (4/25) Yes, those are new uniforms that Kordell Stewart and Jerome Bettis were modelling this afternoon (left). The new uniforms are only slightly different than the ones the Steelers have been wearing for the last 30 seasons. The only changes are on the shirts. The logo (which is unchanged) is now displayed on the breast near the right shoulder. Also, the numbers are shaped differently and the Nike swoosh has replaced the Starter star logo on the sleeve. The old uniforms were done by Starter, and now that Nike is doing them, they wanted to do changes. (4/19) The Steelers used their #1 draft pick to select CB Chad Scott from Maryland. Scott is a 6'1, aggressive corner with strong tackling skills. ESPN's Mel Kiper had him ranked as the third best CB in the draft. In the second round, the Steelers selected WR Will Blackwell from San Diego St. Kiper calls him a "big receiver with big hands". The Steelers have also agreed to terms with free agent CB Donnell Woolford from the Bears. Woolford played for Chicago for eight seasons and has 32 career interceptions. This is apparently the end of Rod Woodson's days as a Steeler. Woolford accepted a four year contract. Click here to see the 1997 Steelers Draft Selections (4/18) The Steelers have re-signed two players, LB Eric Ravotti and S Myron Bell, for next season. They also signed TE Mitch Lyons from the Falcons, and former Steeler WR/KR Henry Bailey. (4/4) DL Kevin Henry re-signed with the Steelers yesterday. Henry started most of the games last year for the injured and now-departed Ray Seals. This signing paved the way for the Steelers to trade DE Brenston Buckner to Kansas City for that much-needed, real important 7th round draft pick. Cowher and the Steelers are upset by Buckner's bad attitude so they traded him. Trading our starting defensive end for a draft pick who'll probably get cut during training camp was probably not the smartest move. (*** The Steelers later traded that draft pick to San Diego)(3/26) The Steelers will open next season at home vs. the Dallas Cowboys. Can anyone think of a a better way to start the season? The Steelers also have two Monday Night games on their schedule, but both are away - Jags(week 3) and Chiefs(week 9). There are also two Sunday night home games against the Colts(week 6) and the Ravens(week 10). In addition, the Steelers have to play four of their last five games on the road, and their bye week is after week 2! A wierd schedule this year indeed. Click here to see the complete 1997 Steelers schedule. (3/7) In a somewhat surprising move, the Steelers have re-signed QB Mike Tomczack. Tomczack will most likely become the emergency QB behind Miller and Stewart. Tomczack signed for less than 300 grand, and will be a veteran teacher for the two young QB's.
(3/6) CB Deon Figures has signed with Jacksonville. This comes one day after Seals and Mills left (see below). Figures never did develop into the great CB that the Steelers drafted as their #1 pick in 1993. The guy hardly ever played. Look forward to Steelers receivers having big games against him next year. (3/5) WR Ernie Mills and DE Ray Seals have both signed with the Carolina Panthers. Both these guys missed basically all of last season. Seals is easily replaceable but Mills was kind of a big loss. Though not a starter, Mills was a speedy clutch receiver who always came through in big situations, like in the 95 championship game. With Hastings also probably leaving and Kordell moving to full-time QB, the Steelers need receivers. (2/17) The Steelers have agreed to terms with RB Jerome Bettis. He has signed a four year, 14.4 million dollar contract, making Bettis the NFL's 3rd highest paid RB. This signing comes right after losing Chad Brown and Cushion Willie (see below). This is huge for the Steelers, who are not known for resigning free agents. (2/15) All-Pro LB Chad Brown has signed with the NFL's scabbiest team, the Seattle Seahawks. Brown, who was expected to leave, signed a deal that will pay him over $30 million. CB Willie Williams has also signed with the Seahawks. Williams takes his patented 10-yard cushion and his one 1996 interception to the AFC's 12th ranked defense. (2/7) The Steelers have signed CB J.B. Brown, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Brown will help fill a possible void at CB, since the Steelers' top three corners are all free agents. (2/2) Six Steelers played in today's Pro Bowl. Jerome Bettis had a nice run after a catch, and also got into a wrestling match with former Steeler Kevin Greene. Carnell Lake also turned in a nice play, breaking up a Brett Farve TD pass. The AFC won in OT, but the real highlight was that guy kicking the million dollar field goal. (1/25) Mike Webster was elected to the hall of fame. Webster was the Steelers' center from 1974-88. He played in 220 games (team record) and was a nine time all-pro. The bad news: Lynn Swann was once again shafted by HOF voters. (1/18) The Steelers replaced recently departed defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau today. The man they chose was Saints defensive coordinator Jim Haslet. Haslet is infamous in Pittsburgh because as a player for the Bills in 1979, he kicked Terry Bradshaw in the head. Haslet takes over one of the NFL's top defenses.
