The 10 Best Personnel Moves10) Steelers pick up Gary Anderson off of waivers (1982)
It's hard to believe that Gary Anderson - a guy who would become the greatest kicker in team history, a guy who would become the NFL's all-time leading scorer, a guy who is still playing 20 years later - was picked up off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills, a team who would lose the Super Bowl on a missed FG eight years later. 9) Steelers stick with system (1972-present)For the past 30 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had the same exact game plan - play soild defense and run the ball. Then they go out and draft players that fit that mold. The result - 19 playoff appearances, 15 division titles, 5 AFC titles, and 4 Super Bowl titles. 8) Steelers sign Donnie Shell as an undrafted free agent (1974)No one thought Shell was good enough to draft, so the Steelers decided to invite him to camp and give him a shot. Fourteen seasons and 51 interceptions later, Shell retired as arguably the best safety in team history. 7) Steelers draft Rod Woodson (1987)This pick seemed like a bust when Woodson spent the first part of the 1987 season running track in Europe, but this was no bust. Woodson single-handedly won games for the Steelers and will be in the Hall of Fame. This pick is especially significant when you consider that it came the year between John Reinstra and Aaron Jones. 6) Steelers hire Bill Cowher and Tom Donahoe (1992)The Steelers had been going downhill ever since the mid-1980's and now they had to replace legendary coach Chuck Noll. The hirings of Cowher and Donahoe brought the pride back to Pittsburgh. Cowher led the team to six straight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl trip. Donahoe's signings saved the team in the early years of free agency. 5) Tails never fails (1970)The Steelers and Bears both finished with league worst 1-13 records in 1969, so a coin flip determined who would get the #1 pick. Fortunately for the Steelers, the Bears called heads. When the coin came up tails, the Steelers got Hall of Fame QB Terry Bradshaw. 4) Steelers trade for Jerome Bettis (1996)For a second round pick, the Steelers got the man who would become one of their all-time greats. The Bus has piled up over 10,000 yards - and he's not done yet. 3) Steelere hire Chuck Noll (1969)People always talk about Shula, Lombardi, Walsh, ect. - Chuck Noll rarely ever gets the credit he deserves from being the only coach ever to win 4 Super Bowls. The Steelers actually offered the job to Joe Paterno (Penn State sucks) first, but fortunately for us, he turned it down. 2) Steelers draft Joe Greene (1969)
Everything that has happened in the past 33 years can be traced back to draft day, 1969. Where would the Steelers dynasty have been without Joe Greene? This pick is what kicked off a decade of dominance. 1) Steelers draft a dynasty (1974)The 1974 Draft - First round: Lynn Swann, WR from USC. Second Round: Jack Lambert, LB from Kent State. Fourth Round: John Stallworth, WR from Alabama A&M. Fifth Round: Mike Webster, C from Wisconsin. Four Hall of Famers and the heart of the greatest dyansty ever in one single draft - I defy you to tell me a greater day in the history of personnel moves in pro sports. Honorable Mentions:
