PLAYER MOVEMENT

Unrestricted Free Agents

Player What to Expect / What Happened
S Carnell Lake Signed with Jaguars
S Darren Perry Retired
S Lee Flowers Re-signed
FB Tim Lester Witman was re-signed, so Lester is gone.
WR Charles Johnson Signed with Eagles
TE Mark Bruener Re-signed
PK Norm Johnson The Steelers are cheap, so Norm is once again out in Pittsburgh
RB Fred Macafee Freddy Mac was a first alternate for the pro bowl this year, and was the captain of our special teams during Super Bowl XXX. He's our best special teams player, and won't be that sought after, so the Steelers should reward Freddy with a decent contract offer.
LB Donta Jones Signed with Panthers
OT Oliver Gibson Signed with Bengals

Steelers Retiring?

OL Will Wolford He's already unofficially announced his retirement.
OL Jim Sweeney Sweeney is really old, but he doesn't play too often, so he may be back.
QB Mike Tomczack With Kordell's job in question, Tomczack is suddenly having glorious visions of starting again. He won't call it quits just yet.

Wore Out Their Welcome?

WR Jahine Arnold He would have been gone last year, but he had one good pre-season game and then Lee Flowers put him out of commission for the rest of training camp, so he got to stay. He didn't even dress for most of the games. Kiss him goodbye.
RB Richard Huntley The pre-season hero turned into the fumble king, and may have lost his spot as Bettis' backup.
OT Jamain Stephens Amazingly, Stephens came back from the dead to start several games for the Steelers in 1998. Was that enough for this former first round bust to save his job? It depends on what the coaches think of him now.
CB Jason Simmons He was absolutely horrible, but it was just his rookie year. He is on the expansion list, but if the Browns don't take him, he'll at least be back for training camp.
QB Kordell Stewart Ok, I know everyone hates him right now, but there's no way the Steelers are giving up on him this easily. I just put him on this list to clear that up.
QB Mike Tomczack There was some odd speculation that with his negative public comments about Stewart's work ethic, Tomczack may have fell out of favor with management. Could he be cut? I hope not, but that has been speculated. C'mon, we're not the Cincinnati Bengals, right? God forbid he bad-mouthed a guy that sucked. Not to mention the fact that Stewart always downplayed Tomczack's performance as a replacement in several games. Tomczack should be here as long as he wants, and after he retires he should be offered a coaching job by the team.

1999 Draft: An Early Look

The Steelers will draft 13th overall in this year's NFL Draft, which is unusually high for them. That was the one bright side to the horrible collapse the Steelers suffered at the end of last season. So who will they draft? Well, the smart bet would be on wide receiver, even if CJ re-signs. The Steelers desperately need a big play WR and this is a good year for that position. N.C. State's Terry Holt is the top WR, so he'll probably be gone by the time the Steelers pick. Ohio State's David Boston is the second highest rated WR, but he's really got an attitude, and the Steelers usually stay away from players like that. Also available could be Tennessee's Peerless Price, who was the Fiesta Bowl hero for the national champion Vols.

If the Steelers don't draft a WR, they may go for another offensive lineman. Another possiblity would be outside linebacker. Gildon and Emmons are solid players, but neither is as dominate a player as Greene or Lloyd were, especially on the pass rush. The draft is April 17-18, so I'll have much more around that time.

1999 Opponents

HOME:

Cleveland Browns Tennessee Titans Cincinnati Bengals Baltimore Ravens

Jacksonville Jaguars Seattle Seahawks Atlanta Falcons Carolina Panthers

AWAY:

Cleveland Browns Tennessee Titans Cincinnati Bengals Baltimore Ravens

Jacksonville Jaguars Kansas City Chiefs Buffalo Bills San Francisco 49ers

The Steelers schedule will be dominated by mostly divisional games. In 1994, the Steelers played six divisional games. In 1999, they will play ten, including two highly anticipated games against the new Cleveland Browns (I'm already pumped!). The rest of the schedule is a bit weaker than usual, but of course we still have to play at Kansas City!! At least it probably won't be a Monday night game again. Also, they must play at Buffalo and at San Francisco, two tough road games. Hilighting the Steelers home schedule is the NFC champion Atlanta Falcons. The actual schedule with dates and times won't be announced for a couple of months.
